Malta

Located in the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Sicily, the Maltese archipelago basically consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. Their total population in 2000 was 382,525.

The largest island of the group is Malta, from which the archipelago takes its name. Valletta, the capital, is the cultural, administrative and commercial centre of the archipelago. Malta is well served with harbours, chief of which is the Valletta Grand Harbour. Malta's international airport is situated five kilometres from the capital.

Sliema and St Julians are areas of the more modern part of the island and are known tourist areas. Full of internationally known shopping outlets along with opportunities to take full day excursions to nearby Sicilly or just harbour cruises.

The Maltese Islands have been described as one big open-air museum. What makes them unique is that so much of their past is visible today. Delve into the Islands' mysterious prehistory, retrace the footsteps of St Paul or see where the Knights of St John defended Christendom. Malta has many Sacred Temples with stunning artwork still in very good condition. These are scattered around the island and its various cities.

Paceville is the place to be if you’re after nightlife. There you find some of the top discotheques, cinemas (including one of the biggest IMAX screens in the world), pubs of various types, bowling, internet cafes, an ice-skating arena, the Bay Street centre and more. Other nightspots include Bugibba and some venues in and around Rabat.
